Psikanalizin gerek klinik bir tedavi yolu gerekse açıklayıcı bir yöntem olma gücünü yitirmesinde elbette kültür, ekonomi, politika, tıbbın kendisi vb alanlarda ortaya çıkan gelişmelerin önemli rolü oldu. Ancak, kuramsal düzeyde psikanalizin içinde var olan eleştirel yeteneğin giderek solmasının, giderek daha dogmatik ve Ortodoks bir hale gelmesinin, pratik düzeyde neredeyse mistik bir yapılanmaya yönelmesinin de bunda rolü büyük.
